Environmental Management & Energy Investigative Research
Nigeria is currently facing air and solid waste pollutions as a result of poor solid waste management and high dependency on fossil fuel as a source of energy. The use of biomass for energy production is one of those alternatives that have recently become attractive around the world as a source of clean and sustainable energy. Biofuel utilization is environmentally friendly as it emits less carbon and, hence, a credit less carbon in global warming. Nigeria mainly depends on fossil fuel as the dominant primary source of energy, which accounts for over 90% of Nigerian foreign exchange earnings. The fear of escalation in the price of petrol, depletion of the total volume of oil reserve (as the oil experts speculate), and increase in air pollution and emission of pollutants are deemed as negative effects of using petroleum fuels. Therefore, it has become necessary for Nigeria, which faces many economic challenges, to find and provide alternative sources of energy. If achieved, it will help immensely in reviving the gradual dwindling of Nigeria’s economy.
Broad Objective
The broad objective of this project is to identify sustainable methods of increasing and optimizing biogas production with multiple digestions and landfill, its efficiency for cooking, electricity and as a gaseous vehicle fuel, and associated effects on human health and environment.
Specific Objectives
The specific objectives of this project are to;- Determine the level of household indoor and outdoor emission concentration (NO2, CO, VOCs, and SO2) of liquefied petroleum gas and biogas
- Ascertain the most efficient and effective way of converting organic waste to biogas
- Determine the physio-chemical of the digestive feed stock before & after digestion
- Evaluate the quantity (productivity) and quality (composition of methane content) of the produced biogas
- Determine the different chemical compositions (pathogens, toxic chemicals, heavy metals, genotoxic/radioactive) of bio-fertilizer and its efficiency on crop production
- Explore the health and environment hazards associated with biogas production?
